The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the devolution of voter registration to the ward level in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026.
The move, approved by the Commission, aligns with its policy to expand registration access before major off-cycle elections, as previously implemented in Edo, Ondo, and Anambra States.

Starting Monday, September 29, 2025, voter registration will extend from the FCT office and six Area Council offices to all 62 wards, creating a total of 69 registration centres.
The exercise will run until October 8, 2025, in compliance with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates the suspension of voter registration 90 days before an election.
INEC has also suspended online pre-registration in the FCT, effective September 15, 2025, requiring all pre-registrants to complete their registration at designated physical centres to validate their status.
Online and in-person registration will resume after the February 2026 election and continue until August 2026, ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The devolution aims to make voter registration more accessible to eligible citizens in the FCT.
INEC has urged those yet to register to take advantage of the ward-level centres.
Registered voters elsewhere in Nigeria can transfer their registration to the FCT, and FCT residents may transfer their registration to preferred wards within the territory.
However, INEC emphasised that double or multiple registrations are illegal and punishable under the law.
Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, encouraged widespread participation, stating, “We appeal to all eligible citizens to seize this opportunity to register and ensure their voices are heard in the upcoming elections.”
The list and addresses of the 69 registration centres are available on INEC’s website and official platforms.
The devolved registration is expected to boost voter turnout for the FCT Area Council elections by making the process more convenient.
