FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has said the outcome of the just concluded Area Council elections in Abuja has exposed what he described as the hypocrisy of politicians who engage in token gestures to win public sympathy.
Wike made the remarks on Sunday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while reacting to the results of the polls in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to results reported by Daily Post, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in five of the six Area Councils, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won one.
Speaking to journalists after his meeting with the President, Wike said the election outcome demonstrated that residents of the FCT were no longer swayed by what he termed performative politics.
“This election has further exposed the hypocrisy of people who go about buying corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers for the purpose of a campaign just to deceive Nigerians,” the minister said.
He argued that such symbolic acts, often carried out during electioneering periods to project humility and grassroots connection, were increasingly being rejected by voters who were more interested in tangible governance outcomes.
Wike added that the poll had clarified the political landscape in the FCT, asserting that Nigerians could now distinguish between the ruling party and what he described as the “real opposition”.
“The residents of the FCT demonstrated that they cannot be deceived by emergency democrats, who have chosen not to see anything good in our country and its government,” he said.
The minister’s comments come amid heightened political activity in the capital territory, where control of Area Councils is seen as strategically significant ahead of future national elections. The APC’s strong showing in five councils is expected to bolster its influence in the FCT, while the PDP’s solitary win underscores the competitive nature of politics in the territory.
Observers say the election results may further shape political alignments within Abuja, particularly as the Tinubu administration continues to implement its policy agenda at the federal level.
