The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has firmly dismissed social media reports alleging that an assassination attempt was made on Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, describing the claims as entirely false and unfounded.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command clarified that no such incident had been reported to any police formation within the FCT, nor has any record of an attempted attack on the military officer surfaced in their investigations.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the rumour appears to have originated from unverified online posts that quickly circulated across various platforms, sparking concern among some residents. She emphasised that the Command views such misinformation as dangerous, particularly given its potential to incite fear and disrupt public order.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination of Lt. Ahmed Yerima. The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory. The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the statement read.
SP Adeh reiterated the FCT Police’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across the territory. She urged residents to remain calm, avoid sharing unsubstantiated reports, and rely on official communication channels for accurate information.
While assuring the public of prompt and professional responses to genuine security concerns, the Command encouraged residents to play an active role in safeguarding the community by reporting suspicious behaviour or activities.
“For the safety of all residents, the Command urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Division,” the statement continued. Members of the public may also contact the Command Headquarters directly via its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08068587311.
The Police Command concluded by reaffirming its dedication to transparency and public engagement, promising to update residents swiftly whenever verified information emerges.
SP Josephine Adeh, ANIPR, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, signed the press release.
