Jerusalem’s Old City was rocked by a series of loud explosions and Iranian missile warnings on Friday, leaving a trail of damage and raising concerns about the safety of sacred sites.
Smoke was seen rising near the historic walls, with footage showing a crater on a road near the Zion Gate, just a few hundred meters from revered landmarks like the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Western Wall, and Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Thankfully, initial assessments suggest the damage was caused by falling debris from a missile interception, rather than a direct strike.
Witnesses described seeing an object plummeting from the sky before a massive blast sent white smoke into the air. Authorities are working to clear explosive fragments, and one person was treated for minor injuries.
The incident has sparked strong condemnation from Israel’s foreign ministry, which accused Iran of directly targeting sites sacred to three major world religions.
Officials described the attack as “madness,” particularly given its timing on Eid al-Fitr. The event has intensified international concerns about protecting cultural and religious heritage sites amid the escalating regional conflict.
