After cutting off his wife’s wrist over suspicion of infidelity, an Enugu State-based man, Sunday Echege has landed in police net.
Disclosing the development in a statement, Enugu Police Command Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe said that suspect was arrested by police with the assistance of members of his community.
Ndukwe noted that the incident occurred in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka Local Govermeant Area of the state on Tuesday.
The police spokesman stated, ”Echege was arrested through the intervention of community members and the machete allegedly used to commit the crime was retrieved.”
Ndukwe quoted the suspect as confessing that he took the action because he suspected his wife Chinonso of sleeping around.
The statement further said, “The Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to the Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege.
“The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.”
Ndukwe promised the suspect would be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigation and reiterated the commitment of the Commissioner of Police to ensuring justice.
The Plice PRO said, “The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect.
“He further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resort to violent criminal acts.”
In a similar case, a lady identified as Iyanu Adedeji, 22, on January 13 allegedly stabbed her husband Funsho Jimoh to death in the Gbonogun area of Abeokuta in Ogun.
Iyanu and Funsho, who had two children between them, engaged in an argument after Funsho allegedly accused her of committing adultery.
Iyanu confessed to police that the argument degenerated into a scuffle and she stabbed Funsho with a knife without knowing it would lead to his death.
