Governor Lawal pays tribute to ‘dependable monarch and father figure’
Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, has passed away at the age of 71 following a prolonged illness. The respected traditional ruler died on Friday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The news of his passing was officially confirmed by Sulaiman Idris, spokesperson to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
In a heartfelt statement released shortly after the announcement, Governor Lawal expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late Emir as a pillar of wisdom and stability within the state.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” Governor Lawal said. “I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guides me and other state leaders. May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah.”

Emir Bello ascended to the throne in March 2015 following the death of his father, becoming the 16th Emir of Gusau. Over his decade-long reign, he was widely regarded as a unifying figure and played a significant role in promoting peace, cultural heritage, and community development in Zamfara State.
His leadership was marked by a commitment to fostering dialogue and cooperation among the diverse communities under his domain. He was also known for his efforts in supporting state initiatives aimed at addressing security and social challenges in the region.
Tributes have poured in from traditional institutions, political leaders, and citizens alike, all mourning the loss of a monarch whose influence and compassion left a lasting impact on the lives of many.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course. The late Emir is survived by his family, members of the Gusau Emirate Council, and the people of Zamfara, who now mourn the passing of a revered leader.
