Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai appeared before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday as his arraignment over alleged corruption charges commenced under heavy security.
The El-Rufai court arraignment marks a major development in ongoing investigations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is prosecuting him alongside Joel Adoga over allegations of money laundering and conversion of public property.

El-Rufai was brought to the court premises at about 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle and remained inside for over 30 minutes before being escorted into the courtroom at approximately 9:34 a.m. Dressed in a light green babanriga and matching cap, he was surrounded by operatives of the ICPC and the Department of State Services (DSS), who formed a tight security cordon around him.

Security presence was significantly heightened around the court complex, with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Mobile Police, the DSS, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed to maintain order. Vehicular movement around the area was restricted, forcing motorists into a single lane and causing traffic congestion along major routes leading to the court.
Journalists who arrived as early as 7:00 a.m. to cover the proceedings were denied access to the courtroom by DSS operatives, highlighting the sensitivity of the case.
The former governor has been in ICPC custody since February 19, following his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was initially detained over related allegations. His current arraignment by the ICPC adds another layer to the legal challenges he faces.
In addition to the corruption charges, El-Rufai is also linked to a separate case involving allegations of cybercrime and threats to national security. According to filings by the Department of State Services, the charges include the alleged unlawful interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in violation of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.
