The Federal Commissioner representing Ekiti State at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Omowumi Ogunlola, has announced that she will not be contesting for a seat in the National Assembly in the 2027 general elections.
Ogunlola, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives, stated that her decision was motivated by a desire to focus on her current national assignment and deliver quality service to both the country and Ekiti State.
Speaking at a media briefing in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, she said, “Let me be very clear: I will not be contesting for the House of Representatives in 2027. However, the future remains open, and I will continue to serve Ekiti State in every capacity I can, always prioritising the collective interest of our people above personal ambition.”
The former federal lawmaker had been widely viewed as a strong contender capable of returning to the House of Representatives to represent Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II, thanks to her popularity, solid support base, and previous track record in both state and federal legislatures.
Ogunlola said her decision was made after consulting her political structure and key stakeholders to ensure clarity, alignment, and unity of purpose. “Every step I take is guided by responsibility, consultation, and the broader interest of Ekiti State,” she emphasised.
She further explained that her current role at RMAFC comes with significant responsibilities at a strategic national level. “The Commission plays a key role in revenue allocation and fiscal matters that directly impact states, including Ekiti. With important exercises and engagements ahead, it is imperative that Ekiti maintains strong, stable, and effective representation at that level,” she said.
Ogunlola noted that constitutional and ethical provisions require anyone seeking elective office to resign from such a federal position, a decision she said could have implications for Ekiti State’s interests if taken at this time.
“Leadership requires wisdom, proper timing, and the courage to place collective interest above personal aspiration. Every decision I make is guided by what best serves Ekiti State and its people,” she said.
She also thanked Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his guidance and support, describing his counsel as invaluable to both her and their shared vision for the state’s progress.
Ogunlola reassured her supporters, political associates, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that empowerment programmes and developmental initiatives would continue.
“I remain deliberate, clear-minded, and fully committed to the progress and empowerment of our people. Ekiti has always been and will always be my priority. Together, we will continue to build a stronger, more prosperous, and united Ekiti State. Let us stay focused and put Ekiti first—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come,” she said.
