The Federal Government, FG, has designated Friday, September 5, as a nationwide public holiday in observance of Eid al-Mawlid, the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth.
This announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, acting on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Ajani extended her congratulations to Muslims, both in Nigeria and abroad, on this special occasion.
She called on them to embody the Prophet’s qualities, such as peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.
She also encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of their faith, to use the holiday as an opportunity to pray for the nation’s peace, security, and stability.
Additionally, she urged them to support the government’s initiatives aimed at fostering national unity and progress.
In a message wishing Muslims a joyful and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid, the Minister of Interior stated that the celebration is a chance to strengthen a sense of brotherhood, encourage peaceful coexistence, and adopt the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service.
The minister further asked citizens to abide by the law and remain vigilant while supporting government policies designed to advance national unity and development.
Observed during Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Mawlid celebrates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.
The day is typically marked by prayers, lectures, processions, and charitable acts.
