A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Segun Showunmi has urged President Bola Tinubu to make national security his main goal during his state visit to the United Kingdom.
Showunmi, in a statement shared on his Facebook page, stated that Tinubu needs to focus on stopping the violence affecting Nigerian communities.
He explained that many villages in Nigeria face constant attacks. Farmers are being chased from their lands, and innocent people are being killed.
Even though Nigeria has used its military to fight these criminals, the violence has not stopped. Showunmi noted that this is because there is a hidden network that provides money and weapons to these gunmen.
Showunmi maintained that the United Kingdom has a moral duty to help Nigeria, because Britain played a major role in Nigeria’s history and the 1914 merger of the country.
He explained that since Nigeria is a very important member of the Commonwealth, the UK should not just watch while the country struggles.
He also suggested that the UK has the tools to help. They have great intelligence services and systems to track money.
According to him, Nigeria needs the UK to help find the people who fund these terrorists. They also need help to stop the flow of illegal weapons and to improve how Nigeria investigates these crimes.
Showunmi noted that trade and investment are good, but they cannot work if people are not safe. No business can grow if farmers cannot farm or if traders are afraid to travel.
He wrote, “Investment, trade agreements, and economic partnerships however attractive cannot substitute for the basic condition of national life: safety. No investment climate can flourish where farmers cannot farm, traders cannot travel, and rural communities live under constant threat of massacre.”
He therefore urged Tinubu to tell British leaders that security must come first.
