Following the outbreak of diphtheria in parts of Lagos State, the management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, is set to distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to its staff.
This decision comes as several cases of the disease have been referred to the hospital for treatment.
Additionally, the hospital has announced plans to enforce the mandatory wearing of face masks for both staff and visitors to help curb the spread of the infection.
New Daily Prime gathered that six confirmed cases of diphtheria are currently being treated at LASUTH, while one critical case has been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) for specialized care.
Meanwhile, vaccination against diphtheria is actively ongoing at the hospital.
The outbreak was first detected at King’s College, Lagos, where one student tragically died from complications of the disease.
Among the 34 cases discovered among students, those with mild symptoms were treated and discharged at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, while 14 serious cases remain under treatment.
Medical experts note that uncomplicated cases of diphtheria are curable but caution that the disease is highly contagious and can be transmitted through bodily secretions.
Health professionals working with diphtheria samples are advised to wear face masks and practice proper hand hygiene to prevent infection.
