A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has accused President Bola Tinubu of being unwilling to tolerate opposition or political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu made the remarks in a post shared on his official X account, where he expressed concern about what he described as growing complacency among Nigerians despite the country’s mounting challenges.
In the strongly worded statement, the former presidential aspirant said he was surprised that many Nigerians were “choosing to enter slavery willingly” and appearing content with what he characterised as servitude.
“I’m surprised that so many Nigerians are choosing to enter slavery willingly, and happy about it, embracing servitude,” he wrote.
He lamented what he described as a fading memory of the nation’s struggle against military dictatorship, warning that Nigerians risk repeating past mistakes by failing to challenge perceived authoritarian tendencies.
“We seem to have forgotten the fight we had against military dictatorship and those cruel leaders not too long ago,” Momodu stated.
According to him, leaders with what he termed “messianic posturing” often act in self-interest, prioritising themselves, their families and close associates. He argued that Nigeria appears to be approaching a critical point, claiming that only divine intervention could rescue the country from its current trajectory.
Momodu further alleged that President Tinubu was not open to political competition in 2027 and expected unconditional support despite what he described as widespread governance failures.
“There’s no doubt that President Tinubu is not open to any competition in 2027. He expects complete support even though there have been terrible failures in every area. Budgets, nil. Security, nil. Propaganda,” he wrote.
He concluded by warning Nigerians not to ignore what he framed as early signs of democratic backsliding.
“When tomorrow comes, let no one say we weren’t warned beforehand. My message isn’t about politics, but it’s a simple and forward-thinking idea that comes from strong love for my country. Nigeria desperately needs a rescue.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not issued any official response to Momodu’s claims.
