The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will on Monday, October 6, 2025, hold a consultative session with the leadership of registered political parties as part of ongoing efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, has listed several priority areas for possible amendment, including state police, power devolution, local government autonomy, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, human rights, and the creation of special seats for women.
In recent weeks, the panel toured the six geopolitical zones to gather stakeholders’ views on the review process. It is expected to submit its final draft to the National Assembly in December for adoption.
House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, in a statement on Sunday, explained that Monday’s engagement would allow political parties to “make inputs, share perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to discussions on key national issues.”
Kalu, speaking ahead of the session, stressed that the involvement of political parties was central to achieving reforms that resonate with Nigerians.
He said, “Political parties remain the engine room of our democracy, and their active participation in this consultation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians.”
The statement further noted that a compendium of bills already before the Committee has been compiled to guide deliberations during the meeting.
