President Bola Tinubu has announced the immediate creation of a Disaster Relief Fund, seeded with an initial capital from the Federal Government, to mitigate the devastating effects of the recent flood in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Earlier, The New Daily Prime reported that President Tinubu visited the state on Monday to offer his condolences to the government and the people affected by the disaster.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, he called on the private sector to match or surpass the government’s contribution to the fund. He also appealed for greater global collaboration from international partners to further support recovery efforts.

“As I visited Borno state today, my heart went out to all those affected by the recent floods. I extended my deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods in this devastating catastrophe. To the displaced persons, I understand the immense challenges you are facing, and I admire your strength, courage, and determination amid such hardship.

“Rest assured, your government is committed to alleviating your suffering. Your government will continue to offer support and relief as we come together to rebuild lives and restore hope as swiftly as possible. I express my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, His Royal Majesty, The Shehu of Borno, and all traditional leaders, alongside our emergency response and humanitarian agencies, local partners, NGOs, CSOs, and Corporate Organizations for their exceptional leadership, unwavering support, and impactful intervention”, the statement added.

Furthermore, the former Lagos State Governor reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment and the state’s resilient spirit in tackling the ongoing flood challenges.

He said, “Your dedication and contributions are truly invaluable and deeply appreciated. I have also directed government agencies charged with humanitarian responses to strengthen coordination and ongoing emergency response. Borno shall once again rise above this tragedy, and together, we will overcome.”
