Suspected Lakurawa bandits have ambushed a group of hunters in Kadidda Forest, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two persons.
The incident occurred at about 4:30 pm on February 3, according to sources at the Sokoto State Police Command.
The victims were among a group of hunters who had entered the forest for what was described as a hunting exhibition when the assailants attacked them.
Sources said the bandits, who were said to be in large numbers and armed with sophisticated weapons, ambushed the hunters at close range and shot two of them dead, while others managed to escape.
One of the victims was identified as Nura Usman, 30, of Magonho village. The second victim, also male, is yet to be formally identified.
“The surviving hunters reported the incident at the Tangaza Divisional Police Headquarters,” a source said.
Following the report, troops from a nearby Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) and other security agencies were immediately mobilised to the area.
However, the attackers had fled before the arrival of troops of Operation DANSAN YANMA, the source added.
The bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at a hospital in Tangaza, while security forces have launched intensive patrols and manhunt operations across the forest and surrounding communities.
