Lagos State Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit (OIA), Mrs Monsurat Alaka, has affirmed that internal auditors remain the backbone of institutional integrity in Lagos State.
She stressed that public trust and government efficiency depend heavily on their commitment to accountability and professionalism.
Speaking during her maiden meeting with auditors in the state public service, Mrs Alaka highlighted the central role auditors play in safeguarding public resources, ensuring compliance, and strengthening governance processes across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

However, she emphasised that the work of internal auditors forms the foundation upon which transparency and fiscal discipline are built.
She urged the officers to uphold accountability and integrity at all times, describing both values as non-negotiable characteristics for anyone entrusted with sensitive audit responsibilities.
According to her, the expectations placed on auditors require exceptional discipline, focus and personal responsibility.
The Permanent Secretary underscored the demanding nature of the profession, noting that diligence, punctuality and full commitment to duty are essential for meeting the benchmarks of the service.
Every audit assignment, she said, requires responsiveness, flexibility and a strong sense of ownership, warning that officers who fall short risk being sidelined.
Addressing heads of audit units and senior officers, Mrs Alaka called for the creation of supportive and collaborative work environments.
She encouraged leaders to mentor junior officers, communicate instructions clearly, and build professional relationships that enhance productivity and help young auditors grow in confidence and competence.
She also charged auditors to embrace continuous professional development, citing the rapidly evolving auditing landscape. Staying updated with modern techniques, technologies and global best practices, she noted, is crucial for maintaining relevance and effectiveness.
Mrs Alaka reiterated the Office of Internal Audit’s commitment to excellence, transparency and accountability.
She commended the dedication and tireless efforts of internal auditors across the state and expressed confidence that with sustained commitment, the audit system would continue to strengthen public institutions and promote good governance.
