The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, commending the elder statesman for decades of service and commitment to Nigeria’s unity.
In a message shared on his official X account on Thursday, the former vice-president celebrated Obasanjo’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s political and national development, describing him as a leader whose life reflects dedication, courage and patriotism.
“Atiku wrote, “As President Olusegun Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, I celebrate a life that has been defined by service, courage, and an enduring commitment to Nigeria.”
“His journey has been remarkable, and his contributions to the unity and progress of our country are truly significant.”
According to Atiku, Obasanjo’s life story continues to stand as an example of leadership and devotion to the Nigerian cause. He noted that the former president’s contributions over the decades have helped shape national unity and progress.
The former vice-president also prayed for the continued well-being of the elder statesman, asking God to grant him strength and many more years of meaningful service.
“I pray that God continues to bless him with good health, strength, and many more years of impactful service to our nation and humanity,” he said.
Offering personal greetings, Atiku added, “On behalf of my family, I warmly felicitate my former boss and a statesman whose life reflects the strength and beauty of Nigeria’s diversity.”
Meanwhile, Obasanjo recently dismissed rumours about his health and speculation surrounding his death, insisting that he remains strong at 89.
Speaking on Wednesday during a colloquium held in his honour in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the former president criticised those circulating a fake letter suggesting he had spoken about his death.
He said such claims were baseless and unnecessary, adding that those spreading them were only wasting their time.
“I dey kampe,” Obasanjo said, stressing that he is still healthy and active.
The former president spoke while delivering a lecture titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” organised as part of activities marking his 89th birthday.
Reflecting on his age and continued strength, Obasanjo said he believes God has intentionally preserved his life and good health.
He also criticised those wishing him dead, saying he would remain alive, energetic and mentally alert for as long as God permits.
