As part of the coronation ceremonies for Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, theatre lovers, residents, and dignitaries gathered on Monday evening at the Apex Event Centre, Agodi, for the performance of Arusa, a play honouring the city’s rich royal heritage.
The historical drama, written by Gbemi Faleti, produced by Biodun Latinwo Eleni, and directed by veteran theatre icon Yomi Duro-Ladipo, formed part of an eight-day series of events leading up to Oba Ladoja’s coronation.
Latinwo, the producer, revealed that Arusa was originally conceived as a tribute for Ladoja’s 80th birthday. However, plans changed when the former governor expressed a preference for a quiet celebration.
“The plan was shelved until news of his coronation came. Today, Arusa has found its rightful place in Ibadan’s history,” Latinwo said.

The play dramatizes the story of Arusa Ogungbenro, a legendary figure from whom Ladoja is said to descend. Traditionally, the Arusa—carrier of the deity Orisa Aabonabon—was doomed to die within a year of receiving wealth and power from the Baale. However, Ogungbenro defied fate, surviving three festival cycles and challenging the political order of his time.
The story’s climax sees Ogungbenro voluntarily stepping down and naming his wife, Morolayo, as his successor—an unprecedented act that changes the course of tradition.
Faleti, the playwright, explained that he merged the ancient and the modern Arusa to reflect Ladoja’s resilience and leadership.
“Arusa is more than a play. It’s a cultural statement, a celebration of Ibadan’s legacy and the enduring spirit of its people,” he said.
The performance featured a star-studded cast, including Dele Odule, Toyin Adegbola, Taiwo Ibikunle, Taofeek Adewale (Diaboluja), Kayode Olaiya (Aderupoko), Akeem Alimi (Ajala Jalingo), and others.
The coronation programme began earlier on Monday with an interfaith prayer session at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, in Ibadan North LGA.
Oba Ladoja, who turns 81 on 25 September, will be officially crowned on Friday, 26 September 2025, at the iconic Mapo Hall, following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on 7 July 2025.
