The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has categorically denied reports claiming the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) following the absence of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who has been on leave since September.
The speculation surrounding his health was further fueled by recent rumors of his death, which the Army has firmly dismissed.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 21, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, emphasised that no senior officer has been appointed as acting COAS, stating, “For the record, no such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).”
Gusau explained that Lieutenant General Lagbaja is currently on his 2024 annual leave and is receiving routine briefings from Major General Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, following standard operating procedures.
He reassured the public about Lagbaja’s well-being, confirming that the COAS is in good health and will resume his duties soon after completing his leave.
“The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume his normal duties at the end of his leave,” Gusau stated, urging individuals spreading false information to cease immediately. He also called on media organizations to verify information with appropriate authorities before disseminating news.
In light of the ongoing rumors, Gusau also addressed a separate issue regarding calls for military intervention in the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In response to a viral video urging military action due to perceived hardships under Tinubu’s administration, Gusau reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the government, stating that advocating for a military takeover is considered treasonous under the Constitution.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy and remain loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” he said, highlighting the military’s focus on its statutory responsibilities, including national integrity.
Gusau concluded by emphasizing the AFN’s dedication to maintaining peace and security in the country, thanking President Tinubu for his support.
He warned that any attempts to advocate for unconstitutional changes would be met with necessary action from the military and relevant security agencies.
