The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the explosion which rocked a mosque in Borno State on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was the work of a suicide bomber linked to Boko Haram.
The blast occurred at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque, located in the Gamboru Market area of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, during the evening Maghrib prayer. Initial reports indicated that several worshippers were killed, while dozens were injured.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Theatre Command, Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed that investigations had established the involvement of a Boko Haram terrorist.
“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist (BHT) suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the scene,” he said.
According to him, troops swiftly responded to the incident alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and other security agencies. Emergency responders, including officials of the Borno State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), were also mobilised to manage the situation.
“The troops, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other sister security agencies, the Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded promptly, securing and cordoning off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety,” Lt. Col. Uba stated.
He added that victims were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment.
Providing an update on casualties, the army spokesperson confirmed that 32 civilians suffered varying degrees of injuries.
“Two of the injured civilians were later confirmed dead at the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition,” he said, noting that “the remaining injured persons are stable and receiving appropriate medical care.”
Lt. Col. Uba further assured residents of Maiduguri and its environs that security has been tightened, especially during the festive period, with increased surveillance and coordinated operations by troops and other security agencies to forestall further attacks.
