The Arewa Coalition of Youths has criticised presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga over his recent remarks distancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from early 2027 campaign activities, calling the statement “unnecessary” and “politically backward.”
In a statement issued by the coalition’s Director General, Abubakar Aliyu Galadiman Takai, the group condemned Onanuga’s position, arguing that it disregards the genuine enthusiasm and loyalty shown by grassroots supporters.
“Rather than acknowledging the enthusiasm and loyalty of grassroots supporters across the country, the statement undermines the very spirit of democratic engagement,” Takai said.
The group expressed disappointment that, instead of leveraging the growing momentum of Tinubu’s support base, Onanuga had chosen to issue what they called a “restrictive declaration” that only serves to dampen morale.
Takai further argued that Onanuga’s interpretation of electoral law was overly rigid and failed to distinguish between unlawful campaigning and legitimate political expression by citizens.
“The support for President Tinubu is organic and nationwide. It cannot and should not be silenced by bureaucratic misinterpretation. Political visibility is not a crime,” he asserted.
The coalition called for Onanuga’s immediate replacement, suggesting a more politically attuned and grassroots-sensitive adviser should take his place — someone better equipped to understand and engage with the mood of the people.
“To all loyal Tinubu supporters, do not be discouraged. Your efforts are noticed, and your passion is the fuel of the 2027 vision. Keep the fire burning, door to door, billboard to billboard, we remain resolute in our support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement concluded.
