The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the collision to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking. FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi explained that the SUV overtook from the right-hand side and collided with a stationary vehicle. The crash involved five individuals in total. Anthony Joshua sustained injuries but has since been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, while two of his companions were killed and two others escaped unharmed.
The incident has sparked public outrage on social media, with many Nigerians criticizing reckless truck parking and poor road safety enforcement. Olamide Lawrence, a Facebook user, described Joshua’s survival as “a miracle,” pointing to trucks parked recklessly on the expressway without caution signs or reflective markers. He warned that such negligence endangers lives and called on authorities to enforce stricter road safety regulations.
Observers noted that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is notorious for frequent accidents, citing the tragic death of late Nigerian musician Dagrin as a similar case where reckless driving and poorly managed roads led to fatalities. Many argue that government inaction has long contributed to recurring accidents, but Joshua’s global profile has drawn renewed attention to these dangers.
The Ogun State Police and FRSC continue their investigations as Nigerians await further updates on the case.
