Operatives of the South-West security outfit, Amotekun Corps, have made significant strides in curbing crime, rescuing a 19-year-old girl from a rape attempt in Ilawe Ekiti, Ekiti State, and apprehending 21 suspects in Ondo State for various criminal activities.

Abiodun Adeleye, the Head of Communications for the Ekiti Amotekun Corps, revealed in a statement on Wednesday that the teenage survivor was rescued by operatives on Tuesday from a 25-year-old suspect, Ojo Adewunmi, who had locked her inside a building with the intent to assault her. The victim, who had been screaming for help, was saved when the Amotekun team arrived at the scene.

“The victim narrated her experience, explaining how she remained helpless and hopeless after screaming until the officers arrived to provide the necessary assistance,” Adeleye said. The suspect has since been handed over to the Ilawe Ekiti Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In a separate operation, Amotekun Corps in Ondo State apprehended 21 suspects involved in a range of criminal activities, including kidnapping, theft, attempted murder, and violations of the anti-grazing law. Four of the suspects were reportedly involved in kidnapping, while five others violated the state’s anti-grazing law. The remaining suspects were arrested for various other crimes, such as theft, destruction of property, and attempted murder.

Amotekun’s Ondo State Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, spoke about the arrests at a press briefing in Akure, highlighting the challenges facing the state. “The security breaches range from suspected kidnappers to issues of civil disorder, theft, and attempted murder,” he said.

Additionally, Adeleye noted that the corps had engaged in talks with herders and farmers to ensure compliance with the anti-grazing law, aiming to maintain peaceful co-existence between both parties. He also announced that Amotekun Rangers, part of a regional effort to combat banditry, have been deployed across the forests in the South-West to prevent the influx of bandits.

“The breaches at borders have reduced due to Amotekun rangers, who are now actively patrolling forests to tackle any bandits in the region,” he added. He expressed gratitude to the public for their continued support and urged them to provide more actionable information to aid security operations.

These developments reflect Amotekun’s ongoing efforts to enhance security across the South-West and maintain peace in the region.
