In the Akwa Ibom local government elections conducted on Saturday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recorded a stunning landslide victory, winning 30 of the 31 chairmanship seats.
Announcing the results on Sunday, the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) said it conducted elections in 31 LGAs and 369 wards.
According to the results posted on the Facebook page of AKISIEC on Sunday, the PDP recorded victory in 30 LGAs while the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the remaining one seat.
The Essien Udim LGA, where the candidate of the APC, Usoro Effiong won the election is the domain of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was also a former governor of the state.
Akapbio, who voted during the LGA elections at Ukana Ward 1, spoke to journalists after he voted, wondering how political parties usually secure 100 percent of the available seats during LGA elections.
He asked, “How do people (political parties) normally score this 100 percent?
“So, it simply means that if elections are allowed to be free and fair, a lot of political parties will choose people on the basis of their competence and not based on the ruling party in that state.”
