The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed confidence that Nigeria is moving in the right direction as the reform agenda of President Bola Tinubu begins to deliver positive results. In a congratulatory message marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Akpabio dismissed claims suggesting that the country is “finished” or beyond redemption.
The former Akwa Ibom State governor emphasised that under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is steadily making progress despite challenges. He called on Nigerians to continue supporting the government’s reforms, assuring them that the sacrifices being made today would lead to a brighter future for coming generations.
“At 65, we are mature and should be working for the unity of the nation and prosperity of our people,” Akpabio said. “We salute your resilience, patience and endurance in the last two years. The pains occasioned by reforms are temporary, and their benefits are beginning to manifest positively.”
The Senate President urged citizens to bear the short-term discomforts associated with the ongoing reforms, underscoring that they are essential for sustainable development.

Akpabio further urged Nigerians to reject the “mischievous narrative” that the country is irredeemable. “Nigeria is not finished. We are on the right pedestal. The Renewed Hope Agenda is reshaping the country, and we are growing and making progress.”
He expressed optimism that with unity and collective support for the reforms, Nigeria will “surely get to the promised land.”
The Federal Government had earlier declared Wednesday, October 1, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960. However, in a late announcement, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation disclosed that this year’s traditional Independence Day parade would be cancelled.
Akpabio’s message resonates with the theme of this year’s celebration, “All hands are on deck for a greater Nigeria,” calling on all Nigerians to join hands in building a more prosperous nation.
