Ondo State, Nigeria — Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the revered Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away on Friday at the age of 96.
The family of the late statesman confirmed his death in a statement released on Friday, revealing that Pa Adebanjo died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
The statement, which was jointly signed by his children — Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh, Mrs. Adeola Azeez, and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo — expressed gratitude for his selfless life of service to God, the nation, and humanity.
It read: “With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation and humanity, we announce the passing on of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa, in a statement released later on Friday, described Pa Adebanjo as a champion of peace and a true statesman who had dedicated his life to the betterment of the people and the nation. He acknowledged Adebanjo’s unflinching commitment to promoting democracy, justice, and equality throughout his lifetime.
“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a leader and statesman who dedicated his life to serving the people. Throughout his lifetime, Pa Adebanjo demonstrated unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, justice, and equality in Nigeria,” Aiyedatiwa stated.
The Ondo governor went on to praise Adebanjo’s tireless efforts in advocating for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nigeria, noting that his contributions had left a lasting impact on the country’s political landscape.
“His tireless efforts to promote peace, stability, and prosperity have left an indelible mark on our country’s history. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May they find comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens,” he added.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a prominent figure in the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, where he played a key role in advocating for regional autonomy and national unity. His passing marks the end of an era for the influential group, and tributes from across the country continue to pour in for the late elder statesman.
