The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the recent defections of the Governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the move confirms fears of a growing attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the defections validate longstanding concerns that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is intent on undermining democracy by systematically absorbing opposition figures into the ruling party.
“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) validates the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s long-standing warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” the statement read.
The party described the defections as a betrayal of the people by governors who were expected to provide an alternative vision and challenge the APC’s governance, especially at a time when, according to the ADC, Nigerians are facing “abject poverty” and worsening living conditions.
“These governors have actually abandoned their people to team up with the ruling party that has made life miserable for the majority,” the party stated.

Abdullahi went further to accuse the APC-led federal government of failing on multiple fronts, including economic management, security, healthcare, and social welfare. He noted that life has become increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians, with rising food prices, widespread unemployment, and growing insecurity.
“Even those who once campaigned for the APC now avoid association with the party. Why? Because the Tinubu administration has failed on all fronts,” the statement added.
Despite the setbacks, the ADC said it remains unshaken and committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative. The party said the defections have only clarified the political divide between those who are aligned with the people’s interest and those driven by personal ambition.
“The 2027 elections will be a clear battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu and his gang of governors in the APC,” the ADC concluded.
The statement reinforces mounting tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections, as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to shift.
