Train services along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor have returned to full operation following Monday’s disruption, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has said.
The Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, announced the development on X on Wednesday, stating that normal services resumed on March 17 after swift intervention by the corporation.
He assured passengers that it is now safe to book trips, noting that new safety and operational measures have been put in place to improve travel conditions.
Opeifa said, “Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, we returned on 17 March to confirm normal train operations are ongoing without obstruction…
“Passengers can continue to confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.
“Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”
He also confirmed that the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, was successfully completed on Tuesday, with support from the Idu District Head, Alhaji Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko.
He added, “We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, yesterday 17th March 2026…”
The disruption occurred on Monday, March 16, around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station. A locomotive detached while the train was in motion and collided with the coaches.
The train, carrying 429 passengers alongside crew and security personnel, recorded no deaths. However, some passengers were injured and received medical attention before the journey continued to Idu Station in Abuja.
The NRC said its quick response helped to limit the impact of the incident and restore services without major delay.
Passengers have now been urged to resume travel on the route as operations stabilise.
