The Speaker of Nigeria’s 10th House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has congratulated the Super Eagles for their impressive qualification to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria.
The quarter-final encounter, played on Saturday in Morocco, saw Nigeria deliver a commanding second-half performance, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealing the nation’s place among the final four teams in Africa’s premier football competition.
After a tightly contested first half, the Super Eagles took control of the match shortly after the restart. Star striker Victor Osimhen opened the scoring just 85 seconds into the second half, rising above the Algerian defence to power home a header from a deep cross delivered by Bruno Onyemaechi. The goal marked Osimhen’s fourth of the tournament, further underlining his importance to the Nigerian side.
Osimhen then turned provider in the 57th minute, demonstrating composure and unselfishness inside the penalty area. Instead of shooting, the Napoli forward squared the ball to Akor Adams, who calmly rounded Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane before tapping into an empty net to double Nigeria’s advantage.
The result effectively ended Algeria’s hopes of progressing, as Nigeria maintained their defensive solidity and controlled possession for the remainder of the match.
Reacting to the victory, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen took to his official X (formerly Twitter) page on Sunday to commend the Super Eagles for their discipline, determination and embodiment of the Nigerian spirit throughout the tournament.
“Bring it home, Super Eagles! Congratulations on qualifying for the AFCON semi-finals after the brilliant win over Algeria,” Tajudeen wrote.
“You have shown discipline, grit and the true Nigerian spirit from the first match. As you face Morocco, my prayers and full support are with you.”
Saturday’s victory represents a significant milestone for the Super Eagles, propelling the three-time African champions to their 17th AFCON semi-final appearance and further cementing their status as one of the continent’s most successful football nations.
The win also sets up a high-profile semi-final clash against host nation Morocco, scheduled to take place on Wednesday in Rabat. With the backing of Nigerian fans and senior political figures, expectations are high that the Super Eagles can overcome the hosts and move one step closer to lifting the AFCON trophy once again.
