President Bola Tinubu has ordered the deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly overnight attack on Worro community by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
The statement was issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga via his Facebook page that Operation Savannah Shield would protect defenceless communities in the area.
The President said the new military formation would spearhead Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at checking the activities of the terrorists and protecting vulnerable communities in the area.
Condemning the attack, Tinubu described the assailants as “cowardly and beastly,” accusing them of deliberately targeting defenceless civilians in what he called a “doomed campaign of terror.”
According to the President, the attackers killed community members who resisted their attempt to impose extremist ideology, opting instead to practise a form of Islam that rejects violence and extremism.
“It is commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue,” Tinubu said.
The President expressed anger over the killings and directed federal and state agencies to work together to provide relief to affected residents and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
He also prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed and extended condolences to families of the victims, as well as to the people and government of Kwara State.
