No fewer than 23 persons have been confirmed dead, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a series of coordinated improvised explosive device (IED) explosions in Maiduguri.
The incidents, which occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on Monday, targeted three busy locations, the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover area.
According to a press statement issued by the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso preliminary investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), swiftly evacuated victims to nearby medical facilities, where the injured are currently receiving treatment.
Security agencies, comprising Police Tactical Units, the military, and other joint operatives, were immediately deployed to the affected areas. The scenes were cordoned off and thoroughly swept by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to ensure no additional explosive threats remained.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the blast sites for an on-the-spot assessment. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The police stated that normalcy has since been restored across the affected areas, while security presence has been significantly heightened in Maiduguri and its environs to prevent further attacks.
Authorities added that investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the coordinated explosions and to bring those responsible to justice.
Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.
