Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new Pope. A native of Chicago, he made history by becoming the first Pope from the United States. He was born on September 14, 1955.
He was elected following the conclusion of the election process conducted by the 2025 papal conclave.
He will be known as Pope Leo XIV. While paying tribute to the late Pope Francis before a crowd of cheering spectators, he called for a peace and unity.

Before He Emerged
Before he was announced as the new pope, there were 133 voting cardinals, and a two-thirds majority was required to select the next pontiff. In the afternoon, white smoke was seen above the Sistine Chapel, signifying that a new pope had been chosen.
Birth and Family
He was born to late Louis Marius Prevost and Mildred Martínez at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. He has two brothers, Louis and John.
Early Ministry
He served as an altar boy at St. Mary of the Assumption Church and completed his studies at St. Augustine Seminary High School in 1973. He received a letter of recommendation for his outstanding performance, which helped launch his missionary journey.

First Vows
As his journey continued, Pope Leo XIV took his first vows in September 1978 and his solemn vows in August 1981.
Experience
The first-ever U.S. pope, now 69 years old, brings leadership experience and a strong missionary background in South America and Peru, where he served as a bishop.
Position and Journey
He is now the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City. He is also the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine, and the seventh Augustinian pope overall.
Between 2001 and 2013, he served two six-year terms as Prior General of the Augustinians. From 2014 to 2015, he was Titular Bishop of Sufar and Apostolic Administrator of Chiclayo.
From 2015 to 2023, he served as Bishop of Chiclayo, and from 2023 to 2025, he was Cardinal Deacon of Santa Monica. That same year, he also served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America—roles that raised his profile and influence within the Church.
In 2025, he became Titular Cardinal Bishop of Albano before succeeding his predecessor, who died in April 2025 due to health challenges.
Citizen of Peru
During his service, Prevost acquired Peruvian citizenship in 2015.
