To prevent the spread of monkeypox (Mpox) and other infectious diseases in the state, the Rivers State Ministry of Health has launched the Pox screening application (Mpox app) and inaugurated an infectious institute.
The Mpox application is a state-of-the-art digital tool.
The Institute of Infectious Disease Research and Development (IIDRD) was commissioned on Friday through the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).
The event also saw the unveiling of the institute’s handbook.
The centre was established to improve disease surveillance and management, indicating a significant advancement in the state health sector and all of Nigeria.
At the launching ceremony, dignitaries from the health sector, government, and private sector, including Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Commissioner for Health, and Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, were present.

This initiative highlights the commitment of the health sector to enhance the healthcare system through research, technological innovation, and digital solutions.
The CMD of RSUTH appreciated the leadership, efforts, and support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in enhancing the state health sector.
The statement read, The inauguration of the IIDRD and the launch of the Mpox App is a testament to the state’s forward-thinking approach, ensuring that Rivers State remains at the forefront of medical research and disease control in Africa.
