Apparently to avoid casualties during and after the festive period, the Rivers State Police Command has banned the use of fireworks, crackers, and knockouts across the state.
The State Police Commissioner(CP) Mustapha Bala
gave the directive today ,adding that the use of fireworks poses grave danger to lives and properties in the state.
This order was conveyed in a statement made available to journalists yesterday through the force spokesperson, Grace Iringe-koko.
The CP advised residents in the state to maintain a friendly and conducive environment during and after the celebration period, assuring them of security.
“The Rivers State Police Command wishes the good people of Rivers State Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year ahead, also we are ensuring to serve you better in this celebration season,” the statement added.
He stressed the health implications on the use of fireworks on the prevailing public peace,adding that an act could lead to panic and tension in the state.
“Consequently, the Command hereby appeals to the general public, parents, and guardians, to warn their children and wards to desist from using such harmful ‘devices.’
He also warned sellers of such products to refrain from doing so,adding that violators of the ban will be arrested and prosecuted.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Mohammed Bala, again wishes to assure the people of the State that the Command will leave no stone unturned to ensure that there will not be any form of security breach.
While also seeking public support and co-operation, the command called on every resident to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the state police command
