The Lagos State Government has reinforced its social protection agenda by extending financial and medical support to elderly persons with disabilities (PWD) and elderly caregivers of children with disabilities across the state.
The intervention, implemented through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), benefitted about 100 recipients under the agency’s annual programme tagged “Cash Support and Medical Outreach to Elderly Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers.”
The initiative aligns with the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of inclusive governance that prioritises vulnerable populations.
Held at the LASODA premises within the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, the programme combined cash disbursement with basic medical services, ensuring beneficiaries received both immediate financial relief and healthcare support.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to dignity, inclusion and social protection for persons with disabilities, particularly senior citizens who face compounded challenges due to age and physical limitations.
According to her, the support is structured to go beyond welfare handouts by enabling beneficiaries to meet personal needs, access healthcare, improve mobility and, in some cases, sustain small-scale livelihood activities.
She noted that LASODA has consistently rolled out programmes aimed at strengthening independence and community participation among persons with disabilities, stressing that inclusion remains central to the agency’s mandate.
Oyetunde-Lawal also addressed concerns often expressed by elderly caregivers about the future of their children living with disabilities, assuring them of continued government support while encouraging sustained engagement with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
She reaffirmed that LASODA would continue to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and implement policies that promote their full integration into society.
Beneficiaries, many of whom described the intervention as timely, especially during the yuletide season, expressed appreciation to the state government for recognising their needs and providing tangible support to ease their daily challenges.
