The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has reaffirmed its dedication to eradicating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and harmful traditional practices across the state through sustained community engagement and sensitisation efforts.
The commitment was reiterated during a Sensitisation Programme at Ago Egun Iwaya Yaba, Lagos.
The event was themed: “Combating Harmful Gender Norms and Practices in Our Communities.”

The Commissioner for WAPA, Bolaji Dada, represented by the Director of the Domestic Violence Unit, Abiola Osifowokan, underscored the necessity of collective action to eliminate customs that jeopardise the safety of women and girls, especially in riverine and rural areas.
She noted that harmful traditional norms, gender discrimination, and violence continue to obstruct societal progress.
Dada stressed that education, advocacy, and the enforcement of relevant laws remain essential strategies for tackling these complex challenges.
She also acknowledged the consistent support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose inclusive governance model has prioritised the empowerment, protection, and participation of women in the State’s developmental agenda.
The Permanent Secretary, Rianat Onigbanjo, represented by the Deputy Director of the Domestic Violence Unit, Fisayo Alabi, delivered the vote of thanks, commending the governor’s inclusion drive and the Commissioner’s passionate dedication to the welfare of women and vulnerable groups in Lagos State.
The sensitisation programme convened key stakeholders, including traditional leaders like Rebecca Oloko delivering a goodwill message from HRM, Oba Sulaiman Ogunoloko, Baale High Chief, Ajannaku Sunday, and High Chief, Jagungbade Yusuf.

Also in attendance were economic leaders like Babaloja General, Ayanrino Hakeem of Yaba Local Council Development Area, and women advocates such as the President of Jakin NGO, Adebiyi Olubukola, all united in the mission to build safer and more equitable communities.
