The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has set up a Special Task Force (STF) to control noise pollution which poses health and environmental risk to citizens.
The setting up of task force aims to curb excessive noise and safeguard public health, especially during and after the yuletide season.
The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab disclosed during a press conference.
Wahab who spoke in the presence of LASEPA’sGeneral Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, said that the state government was committed to a zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution.
Wahab further urged the public to prioritise the health and well-being of residents by reducing noise pollution during this Christmas season.
He called on residents to adhere to the regulations against noise pollution, warning that the task force will monitor, arrest, and prosecute violators.
To ensure that complaints are adhered to, the commissioner said it was mandatory for worship centres, nightclubs, lounges, and bars to obtain permits from the government agency for public events involving amplified sound with soundproofed and enclosed spaces for protection.
The special task force team includes, Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
The notice further disclosed that by next month, public awareness campaigns will be launched, stressing that campaign will focus on educating residents on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of a quieter environment.
