The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has urged the management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) to address environmental concerns observed during a recent inspection at its permanent site.
The visit, conducted by the Agency’s Tertiary Institution Unit, was aimed at evaluating the University’s compliance with sanitation and waste management standards.
The inspection team identified several lapses and called on the institution to take immediate steps to improve its environmental conditions for the safety and well-being of students, staff, and nearby residents.
Leading the team on behalf of KWEPA’s General Manager, Hon. Jide Aina, Mrs. Hassan Fatimoh stressed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring healthy and clean learning environments across all higher institutions in the state.

Reacting to the findings, Dr. Abdulrashid Adekeye Odunola, Director of Health Services at UNILORIN, expressed the University’s willingness to collaborate with the health agency.
He assured the team that the management would reinforce existing environmental measures and promptly address the issues raised.
In a related effort, KWEPA’s School Health Unit carried out inspections at various private schools within Ilorin to assess their compliance with environmental and hygiene regulations.
According to the press Secretary of KWEPA, Aliyu Amode, in a shared document, the checks are part of a wider initiative by the agency to uphold public health and ensure that all schools maintain safe and sanitary learning spaces.
KWEPA reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the environment and public health through regular assessments, awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of environmental laws.
