In a decisive move to strengthen the health sector and enhance the welfare of medical professionals, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved several welfare packages for health workers in Rivers State.
The governor announced the free enrolment of all health workers in the state into the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme.
He also approved the payment of skipping and accoutrement allowances for 2023, 2024, and 2025, alongside residency grants for medical doctors serving in the state government’s healthcare institutions.

Governor Fubara further demonstrated his support for the medical community by approving a new bus for the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).
The announcement was made during a meeting with the leadership of the ARD, RSUTH, led by its President, Dr Abiye Nonju. Also present were the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Oreh; the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof Chizindu Alikor; and the Director of Medical Services, Dr Vincent Wachukwu.
The gathering also included the 1st Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State branch, Dr Ureh Oparaodu, and the Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Rivers State branch, Dr Josiah Appolus.
Governor Fubara expressed appreciation for the commitment of medical practitioners across the state, assuring them that their welfare remains a top priority of his administration.
He pledged to employ additional healthcare personnel to further strengthen service delivery in the state’s health institutions.
In his closing remarks, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to clearing the arrears of the adjusted Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for 2023, underscoring his administration’s dedication to improving working conditions for all health workers in Rivers State.
