The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists against drunk and drug-impaired driving as vehicular movement increases across Cross River State during the festive season.
The warning was issued on Thursday at Odukpani Junction, a major entry point into Calabar, where the Corps intensified patrols and subjected drivers to alcohol and drug screening as part of its yuletide safety operations.
The Cross River Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Innocent Etuk, gave the caution while overseeing the inspection of the Corps’ electronic metro counting equipment, designed to monitor traffic volume, vehicle speed and categories throughout the festive period.
According to Etuk, breathalyser tests were administered to drivers to determine whether they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, noting that impaired driving remains a leading cause of road traffic crashes, especially during peak travel seasons.
He stressed that motorists found to be under the influence would not be allowed to continue their journeys, adding that commercial drivers could be replaced by their fleet operators, while others would face appropriate sanctions in line with traffic regulations.

Etuk explained that data generated from the electronic metro counting equipment would support informed decision-making on patrol deployment, risk assessment and traffic control, particularly for vehicles entering the state capital.
He noted that the equipment helps the agency to track traffic volume, vehicle categories and truck weights, which is critical for managing the increased movement FRSC usually experience during festive periods.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the FRSC also distributed bottled water and road safety flyers to motorists travelling out of Calabar, as part of efforts to promote safe driving and reduce fatigue-related crashes.
