A major source of essential medicines for residents of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, has been wiped out following a devastating fire that destroyed Moore Pharmaceutical Store and several adjoining shops in the Michelin area of the city.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 1 January, along Hamaruwa Way, where the popular pharmacy operated within a commercial building housing multiple businesses.
By the time the fire was brought under control, the structure and its contents had been completely destroyed.
Residents who witnessed the incident said the fire spread swiftly, leaving shop owners helpless as flames consumed drugs, medical supplies and other valuables.
According to Daily Post report, the rapid escalation of the blaze made it impossible to salvage any items from the pharmacy, which served as a key point of access to medicines for people living in the area and neighbouring communities.
A staff member of Moore Pharmaceutical Store confirmed the scale of the loss, stating that nothing was recovered from the premises. According to the staff member, the fire left the building in ruins, with all pharmaceutical products destroyed.
As at the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not been determined. No casualties were recorded, but the economic and social impact of the incident has been described by residents as severe.
Affected shop owners said the destruction of the pharmacy would worsen access to essential drugs, particularly for residents who relied on the outlet for urgent medical needs. Some business owners disclosed that they had recently taken loans to stock their shops and now face financial uncertainty.
There were also allegations of delayed emergency response, as eyewitnesses claimed attempts to reach firefighters during the incident were unsuccessful. The claims have heightened concerns among residents about the state of emergency preparedness in the area.
Community members described the fire as a major setback, noting that beyond the loss of property, the destruction of the pharmacy has disrupted the local drug supply chain, leaving many residents uncertain about where to obtain vital medications in the immediate aftermath.
Several affected traders have appealed to the Taraba State Government, corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals for urgent assistance to help them recover and restore their livelihoods.
