Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Yul Edochie, has issued a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to put Nigeria’s urgent challenges first before engaging in conversations about the 2027 general elections.
The actor, who once openly backed the president, took to his verified Instagram account to share his concern. In his message, he highlighted the worsening living conditions in the country, citing high inflation and growing insecurity as major threats facing millions of Nigerians.
Focus on now, not 2027
In his post, Edochie called on President Tinubu not to allow political distractions to derail his leadership in the present.
He wrote: “To my dear President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, @officialasiwajubat, please don’t let politicians distract you with talks about 2027. We are still in 2025. The high cost of living and the high rate of insecurity are still ravaging Nigerians. These two are the most urgent issues to deal with. May God lead you, sir.”
The statement has since sparked widespread reactions online, as many Nigerians weighed in on the current state of the country and the sincerity of Edochie’s remarks.
Edochie’s earlier support for Tinubu
Yul Edochie was among the few Nollywood figures who openly supported Tinubu during the 2023 general elections. He faced heavy criticism from fans and critics who believed his endorsement did not reflect the realities Nigerians were facing.
Despite the backlash, Edochie maintained his stance. However, his recent message suggests a shift in tone, as he now expresses worry about the hardship gripping the nation.
Renewed call for a cashless policy
This is not the first time the actor has offered policy suggestions to the president. In a separate message shared earlier, Edochie urged President Tinubu to consider reviving the cashless policy introduced by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, the cashless system, though controversial at the time, had some positive effects. He argued that it helped reduce crime and limited the flow of illicit money. He also noted that the policy slightly eased inflation and should not have been scrapped without modification.
Mixed reactions from Nigerians
Yul Edochie’s post sparked a flood of comments on social media. While some applauded his courage for speaking up, others accused him of changing sides or trying to get attention.
Here are a few reactions from Instagram users:
- @classic_ulo said, “You see this mandate that you are standing on, you will soon have arthritis on your leg.”
- @nosakaduna added, “I don’t have a problem with you, but all the curses Nigerians are raining on Tinubu—you must share in them.”
- @thebrainbusy commented, “Good thoughts, but sadly, your dear president won’t listen.”
- @bliss_nation wrote, “Now I understand. You’re mocking this man because he didn’t give you any position.”
- @shanic_beauty_empire asked, “Are we not supposed to be relaxing? Or are you tired of relaxing too?”
- @richman_worldwide questioned, “Aren’t you with him again? I thought you were standing strong with him.”
- @e_autotekk stated, “Now you’ve regained your senses.”
Call for leadership and responsibility
With Nigeria’s inflation rate rising, insecurity spreading across different regions, and poverty deepening, many citizens are calling on the government to take urgent steps. Public figures like Yul Edochie speaking out add weight to the growing public demand for better governance.
Whether President Tinubu will heed these calls remains to be seen. For now, Nigerians continue to voice their concerns, hoping their leaders will act swiftly and sincerely to ease their burden.
