Nigerian singer and record producer Young Jonn has revealed that superstar Davido’s financial success often makes him feel “broke,” but in a way that pushes him to do more.
The “Go Hard or Go Home” singer confessed during a lighthearted sideline interview at the 2025 Paris Fashion Week in France. When asked if he had ever met someone who made him feel financially small, Young John didn’t hesitate to name Davido.
“Too many times, bro. Davido. Whenever I see his money, I’m like, I need to work hard and drop more songs,” he said with a laugh.
Though it was said in a casual tone, the statement reflected both admiration and motivation. For Young Jonn, Davido isn’t just a friend or colleague; he is also a symbol of what’s possible in the industry.
From studio genius to chart-topping star
Young Jonn’s journey in the music industry didn’t begin behind the mic. He admitted in a 2024 interview that becoming a singer wasn’t part of the plan. According to him, he “became an artist by accident.”
Born Udomboso John Saviours, Young Jonn first made his mark as a record producer. His early career blossomed under the YBNL Nation label, headed by indigenous rap icon Olamide. While at YBNL, he produced some of the biggest hits of the 2010s, including tracks for Lil Kesh, Olamide, and other rising stars at the time.
His unique sound, often blending Afrobeat rhythms with street energy, earned him the nickname “The Wicked Producer.” But it wasn’t long before his talents behind the scenes spilt over into the spotlight.
A natural transition into singing
Young Jonn’s leap from beatmaker to singer came as a surprise to many, including himself. What started as studio freestyles and background vocals soon became full songs. Encouraged by fans and colleagues, he began releasing singles of his own. The response was immediate.
His solo efforts, including tracks like Xtra Cool, Dada, and Go Hard or Go Home, quickly gained traction across Nigeria and the diaspora. They showcased a softer, more melodic side of his artistry, proving that he wasn’t just a master at producing for others but also capable of building a unique identity as a performer.
“I didn’t plan this,” he once said about his transition. “I was just vibing. But the love was strong, so I followed the music.”
Davido as inspiration, not competition
Despite his growing success, Young John remains humble. He sees his peers, especially Davido, not as competition but as motivation. The Paris Fashion Week moment offered a rare, honest look at how industry figures view one another outside the studio.
“Davido’s lifestyle is crazy the cars, the jets, the jewellery. But it’s not envy. It’s an inspiration. It makes me want to push harder and stay consistent,” Young Jonn explained further in another interview earlier this year.
His comments highlight an important dynamic in Nigeria’s music scene: mutual admiration. Many of the industry’s biggest names often lift each other up publicly, knowing that one artist’s success can spark another’s ambition.
What’s next for Young Jonn?
As 2025 rolls on, Young Jonn shows no signs of slowing down. He has teased new music, international collaborations, and more live performances. With several hits already under his belt, fans are eager to see how he continues to evolve.
He may feel “broke” compared to Davido, but in the eyes of many, Young John is already rich in talent, creativity, and potential. And with every new song, he’s proving that he belongs at the top.
