Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has opened up about her decision to remain single despite receiving several marriage proposals over the years.
The 52-year-old screen star revealed in a recent interview that she is waiting to find the right partner and does not see her single status as a failure or a source of regret.
“For me not to have found my partner, the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, I don’t see it as a negative,” Akintola said. “I’ve been proposed to many times, and I’ve said no.”
Akintola explained that she has refused to let societal expectations push her into a marriage she does not genuinely want.
She warned that rushing into marriage simply to meet cultural or family expectations can lead to unhappiness and eventual separation.
“Did you just marry because people say marry?” she asked. “Look at divorce ratings now in Nigeria, it’s skyrocketing. Some people are married before they leave the reception if the marriage has broken up.”
The actress pointed out that marriage should be entered into with deep understanding and compatibility rather than as a way of conforming to external pressures.

In addition to discussing marriage, Akintola spoke about parenting and the need to raise sons and daughters with the same sense of responsibility.
She emphasized that boys should be taught the same moral and spiritual values that girls are taught to ensure fairness and accountability in relationships.
“Teach your sons that their body is the temple of God the same way you teach your daughters,” she said. “As soon as you impregnate a girl, no more school for you, my dear. Go and work and raise your child.”
Her comments have sparked discussions online, with many applauding her call for equal responsibility and shared accountability between men and women.
Akintola also advised women to prioritise character and hard work over wealth when choosing life partners.
According to her, relationships built solely on financial comfort often lack the deeper emotional foundation needed for long-term stability.
The award-winning actress, who has enjoyed a decades-long career in Nollywood, is widely respected for her versatility and outspoken nature.
