Celebrated German filmmaker Werner Herzog will be honored with the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, organizers announced on Tuesday.
Known for his haunting, visionary style and fearless storytelling, Herzog, 81, has become one of cinema’s most iconic voices. With a prolific career spanning over six decades, he has written, produced, and directed around 70 films — seamlessly navigating between narrative features and documentaries. His works such as Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man have garnered global acclaim, often blurring the line between fact and myth.
“I have always tried to be a good soldier of cinema, and this feels like a medal for my work. Thank you,” Herzog said in a statement. Defying any hint of retirement, he added, “I am not done yet.”
Herzog is currently in Ireland shooting Bucking Fastard and recently wrapped production on the documentary Ghost Elephants in Africa — further proof that his creative fire still burns strong.
Alberto Barbera, the festival’s artistic director, hailed Herzog as a “tireless explorer” and praised his lifelong commitment to pushing the boundaries of film and narrative. “His body of work is a testament to a radical vision and an unrelenting passion for the unknown,” Barbera said.
Herzog’s influence also extends to acting, with over 30 film and television appearances to his name, including memorable roles in Jack Reacher and The Mandalorian.
The 82nd Venice Film Festival will take place from August 27 to September 6, 2025. The official competition line-up is expected to be unveiled in July. With Herzog’s recognition, this year’s edition already promises a celebration of cinematic daring and artistic legacy.
