Popular and controversial social media personality, VeryDarkMan, has publicly criticised Nigerian music superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid for purchasing luxury cars worth billions of naira at a time when many Nigerians are battling severe economic hardship.
His remarks came shortly after reports emerged that Burna Boy had splashed a staggering ₦3.5 billion on a brand-new McLaren Sienna. According to online sources, Burna Boy is the first African to own this particular model, making headlines across the continent.
Not long after Burna Boy’s acquisition, Davido reportedly joined the big spenders’ list by purchasing a 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680. The vehicle is said to be worth about ₦1.2 billion. Earlier this year, Wizkid also made waves when he reportedly bought a luxury car for ₦1.7 billion.
‘Read the room,’ VeryDarkMan tells music stars
In reaction, VeryDarkMan took to Instagram to share a video where he expressed his disappointment in the music icons. He called them out for what he described as a lack of empathy for ordinary Nigerians and accused them of ignoring the harsh realities facing their fellow citizens.
“Yesterday, I saw the news that Burna Boy bought a ₦3.5 billion car,” he said. “The same day, Davido bought a car for over ₦1 billion. They have been doing these kinds of things back-to-back.”
He questioned whether the trio truly understood the struggles of everyday Nigerians and urged them to “read the room.” According to him, while the musicians are not elected officials, their influence and wealth come largely from their fans, most of whom are facing real financial struggles.
“You guys are not the government,” he noted, “but you benefit from this country and from the fans who made you.”
Focus on Davido’s roots in Osun
VeryDarkMan, who is known to be an associate of Davido, focused most of his criticism on the singer, questioning his contribution to his home state, Osun.
“Let me start with Davido because you are my guy,” he said. “What can you beat your chest and say you have done for Osun State, the place you come from?”
He continued, “The last time I saw you in Osun was during your uncle’s campaign for governor. You helped him win votes. But after that, what have you done that truly benefits the youth in that state?”
He urged Davido to reflect on what legacy he’s building and what real change he has brought to his community, given the massive support he enjoys from fans.
‘What have your fans gained?’
In his video, VeryDarkMan posed a thought-provoking question to all three artists: What can your fans say they have gained from supporting you?
He stressed that while it’s not wrong to enjoy wealth or buy luxury items, it is important for public figures to balance personal enjoyment with a sense of responsibility.
“There’s nothing wrong with being successful,” he said. “But you need to give back to the people who helped you get there. The fans buy your music, stream your videos, attend your shows, and celebrate you. What are they getting in return?”
Mixed reactions online
The video has since gone viral and sparked a debate online. While some netizens supported VeryDarkMan’s view and praised him for speaking out, others defended the artists, arguing that they have a right to enjoy their wealth.
Some commenters pointed out that Davido has previously supported charitable causes, including scholarships, donations, and hospital bills. Others said Burna Boy and Wizkid have also made philanthropic efforts, though these are not always publicised.
Still, the overall sentiment was divided, with many users urging celebrities to show more compassion and awareness, especially in tough times.
As the debate continues, the video has reignited a larger conversation about fame, wealth, and social responsibility in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
