South African singer Tyla has once again claimed the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), beating a star-studded lineup of Nigerian heavyweights.
The 23-year-old star edged out Asake and Travis Scott’s Active, Burna Boy featuring Travis Scott’s TaTaTa, Rema’s Baby (Is It a Crime), Tems featuring Asake’s Get It Right, Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz’s Piece of My Heart, and the collaborative remix Shake It to the Max (Fly) by Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea.
Although she clinched the night’s top Afrobeats honour, Tyla narrowly missed out on a second trophy. Her track Push 2 Start lost in the Best Choreography category.
The win, however, marked her second consecutive victory in the Best Afrobeats category, following her 2024 breakthrough success with Water.
For Nigerian nominees, the night ended on a disappointing note. Ayra Starr lost in the MTV Push Performance of the Year category, while Burna Boy missed out on Video for Good.
The spotlight, instead, shone on international superstars. Lady Gaga dominated with four awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, and Best Collaboration for Die With a Smile with Bruno Mars.
Ariana Grande claimed three awards, including the highly coveted Video of the Year for Brighter Days Ahead. She also presented the Video Vanguard Award to music icon Mariah Carey.
Rising pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter also had a big night, winning three trophies, including Album of the Year for Short n’ Sweet.

The evening also featured historic firsts. American rap legend Busta Rhymes received the inaugural Rock the Bells Visionary Award, while Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin became the first recipient of the Latin Icon Award.
Mariah Carey capped the night by accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, further cementing her legacy.
The 2025 VMAs took place on Sunday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and were broadcast for the first time on the CBS network, extending the show’s reach to a wider American audience.
Tyla’s victory, however, reignited debates over her association with Afrobeats. The singer has faced criticism in the past for her shifting comments on genre identity.
At the 2024 VMAs, she declared that she did not identify as an Afrobeats artiste, instead emphasising her South African Amapiano roots.
But in a March 2025 interview, she appeared to soften her stance, claiming she promotes both Afrobeats and Amapiano on the global stage.
Her statements angered many Nigerian fans, who argued that Afrobeats had already achieved worldwide recognition through pioneers like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido.
Critics accused Tyla of being positioned by international award shows as a face of Afrobeats at the expense of more established Nigerian acts. Others went further, questioning whether her music fits into the Afrobeats sound at all.
Despite the backlash, her win reflects the global rise of African music and the increasing influence of the continent’s rhythms on mainstream pop culture.
For Tyla, the recognition marks another milestone in her fast-rising career, even as debates around authenticity and genre identity continue to swirl.
