Popular American R&B singer Summer Walker has revealed her strong desire to visit Nigeria, saying she is eagerly looking forward to experiencing the country for the first time.
In a candid interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the singer opened up about her fascination with Nigerian culture and how it has grown so much that she’s now considering relocating permanently.
“I want to go to Nigeria so bad,” Walker said during the interview. “But I’m scared because I know I won’t come back.”
The multi-platinum artist added that she wouldn’t just be visiting for fun, she’s already imagining herself settling down, possibly as a royal wife.
Ready for a new life
According to the mother of three, if she ever travels to Nigeria, there’s a good chance she won’t return to the United States. Walker said she could easily see herself becoming the third wife of an African king and raising her children in a palace-like setting.
“I just want to take my kids and just like, we gone!” she said, laughing. “I would be somebody’s third wife. Me and my kids would be put up in some African king’s house. I know it.”
Her comments sparked excitement among fans, especially Nigerians who welcomed the idea with warmth and enthusiasm across social media platforms.
Love for Nigerian culture
Walker’s desire to visit Nigeria appears to stem from her recent exposure to African culture, particularly its food and family-centred values. She shared that she recently tried her first African dish, which left a lasting impression.
“It just seems so fun,” she said. “I had my first African dish the other day, it was good as heck.”
She added, jokingly, “My nyash is good. I’m prepared. I’m ready. I’ve been waiting for this.”
Her use of the word “nyash”, a popular Nigerian slang term for backside, immediately drew attention online and showed her playful embrace of African expressions.
Summer Walker extends birthday plan
The singer also shared that she had originally planned to travel to Nigeria in April to celebrate her 29th birthday. Unfortunately, those plans had to be postponed after her children fell ill.
However, she was quick to reassure fans that her dream trip is still very much in the works. “I still want to go. I’m coming soon,” she said.
Fans react
Walker’s comments quickly went viral, with many Nigerian fans expressing delight at the possibility of the singer visiting, or even moving, to their country. Some jokingly volunteered their uncles, brothers, or even themselves as potential kings ready to welcome her and her children with open arms.
Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram were flooded with memes, light-hearted proposals, and messages of support.
Summer Walker’s remarks may have come across as playful, but they reflect a growing trend among African-Americans and diaspora communities showing increased interest in reconnecting with African culture and heritage.
The singer’s enthusiasm resonates with fans across continents, as she continues to build a strong and authentic relationship with her audience, not just through music but through shared cultural curiosity and admiration.
With her unmistakable voice and open heart, Summer Walker seems ready to cross new borders, both musically and geographically.
And if her instincts are right, Nigeria may very well be calling her home.
