Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has sparked reactions online after expressing apparent satisfaction over the Super Eagles’ failure to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles’ title hopes ended on Wednesday after they lost 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in the semifinals. The match ended 0–0 after regulation time and extra time, forcing a penalty shootout in which Morocco emerged victorious.

Nigeria had been aiming to secure a fourth AFCON title, but missed penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyeamachi proved costly, bringing their campaign to an end short of the final.
Reacting to the outcome, Speed Darlington took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a politically charged comment, suggesting relief over the team’s exit.
“Thank God APC can’t add AFCON to their list of achievements to hide their years of failure. AFCON bye bye,” he wrote.
The comment quickly generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users criticising the singer for celebrating the national team’s loss, while others engaged with the political undertone of his statement.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles are still in contention for a medal and will face Egypt in the third-place playoff as they seek to secure the bronze medal at the tournament.
