Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has achieved a new milestone in her music career, as her hit single “Duduke” earned a Gold certification in New Zealand.
The certification, issued after the song sold 15,000 units, marks Simi’s first-ever international music certification, further cementing her position as one of Africa’s most successful female artists.
The achievement was announced earlier this week, and fans across social media celebrated the singer’s global recognition. The Gold plaque reflects Duduke’s enduring appeal nearly three years after its release.

Released in 2022, “Duduke” quickly became a cultural anthem in Nigeria and across Africa. The song, which translates to the rhythmic sound of a heartbeat, was written as a heartfelt dedication to Simi’s unborn child at the time. Its soulful lyrics and soothing melody resonated deeply with expectant mothers and music lovers alike.
In the accompanying music video, Simi proudly displayed her baby bump, making the song not only a musical success but also a symbol of motherhood and self-expression.
Speaking about the song in an earlier interview, Simi explained that “Duduke” represents love, hope, and the deep emotional connection between a mother and her child.
“The song is basically the sound of my heart beating for my baby,” she said. “It’s about love, anticipation, and the joy that comes with knowing you’re about to bring life into the world.”
Following the song’s release, Simi launched the viral “Duduke Challenge” on social media, encouraging fans and expectant mothers to share creative videos inspired by the track. The challenge became an online sensation, drawing participation from fans across Africa, the diaspora, and even celebrities who joined in celebrating motherhood.
The success of Duduke extended beyond social media. The single topped music charts across multiple African countries and gained international airplay, helping Simi expand her audience beyond Nigeria.
The singer revealed that the song’s emotional impact continues to follow her years later. She shared that her daughter, Adejare, whom she welcomed with her husband, singer Adekunle Gold, is often fondly called “Duduke” by fans.
“Some people call my daughter ‘Duduke’ because she inspired the song,” Simi said. “I don’t find it offensive at all, but I prefer that people call her by her name, Adejare.”
Industry observers say the New Zealand certification marks an important step for African artists breaking into new international markets.
While Afrobeats has grown globally, few Nigerian artists have achieved official certifications in countries as far-flung as New Zealand, highlighting Duduke’s cross-cultural resonance.
Simi, who began her career as a gospel singer before transitioning into mainstream pop, has built a strong reputation for her distinctive voice and relatable songwriting.
Over the years, she has released several hit songs, including Joromi, Smile for Me, and Ayo, and has collaborated with top Nigerian and international artists.
The Gold certification for Duduke adds to her growing list of accomplishments and reaffirms her influence as one of the most consistent female artists in the Afrobeats scene.
“I’m grateful for how far this song has gone,” she said. “It means the world to me that something so personal has touched people all over the world.”
